Some songs are “precleared” this means the song has been okay by the owner to sample. Check with the artist,DJ or label.

Sometimes its as easy as reading the CD Jacket. Some DJ's will say if the music is precleared on the inside of the CD Case.

Another term you should know is “fair use.” This is when a sample may be permitted under a copyright principle.

If you use a short sample for the purpose of commentary or criticism it may be excused as a “fair use.” This isn’t something that will come up a lot but its good to know…
